Brad Lomas - Staying Fit Over 50

Human Resources (HR) Consultant Brad Lomas, like many over-50 men, is a business professional with a sedentary job. Despite the amount of time he spends behind his desk or on the phone with clients, though, Lomas leads an active life to combat obesity and age-related illness. He stays in shape with low-impact activities to protect his body so that he can continue to age gracefully.

Walking is one of the ways that Brad Lomas keeps in shape without overdoing it for his age. He enjoys taking long walks through local Philadelphia parks in the evenings. These walks both keep him in shape and help him combat the stress of daily life. It's hard to stay stressed when you're enjoying nature in a beautiful park, getting low-impact exercise and breathing fresh air. Lomas' walks also allow him to organize his thoughts and ponder HR-related issues so he can better manage his career.

Playing outdoor games like bocce or horseshoes is another option to maintain both physical and mental health. Most outdoor games require at least one other competitor, which means that you'll socialize while getting in shape, and they keep your body moving. These games are also easy on the joints and back, which is a bonus for people over 50.

Whatever the method, exercising at any age is vital to maintaining health. Most importantly, exercise combats diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other physical ailments. In addition, it can improve your mood and help you meet new people with shared interests. Brad Lomas frequently spends time with his bocce friends, savoring evenings of competition and light physical exercise.

Brad Lomas - Why Live Alone?

Brad Lomas is an over-50 bachelor who lives alone in Philadelphia. Though living alone sounds lonely to most, Lomas works with people every day as a Human Resources (HR) consultant. When he comes home, he enjoys reading comic books and completing crossword puzzles in the solitude of his abode. In fact, most people who live alone enjoy the benefits that this independent lifestyle provides. Here are three of the many benefits that you can experience if you choose to enjoy a solitary sanctuary:

  • You can be yourself. Living alone allows you more time to know and to explore yourself without the influence or judgment of anyone. An at-home, purely-you self will emerge after time spent living alone. Psychology calls this experience self-actualization and it refers to a person's self-fulfillment of knowing and being true to who they are.
  • You learn to enjoy solitude and silence. With a roommate, family or a spouse in your house, something will almost always be happening. When you live alone, in contrast, there's just you in the house. Unless you're making noise, there is no noise, and unless you're exposing yourself to a stimulus, you can enjoy stillness in your downtime. At first, the still silence can be frightening, but when your brain accepts that nothing bad is going to happen, it becomes a relaxing environment.
  • You'll be more social. An increased social life isn't the first thing that most people associate with living alone, but it is a well-documented side effect of an empty home. People who live alone are more likely to socialize with their neighbors, spend time with their friends and join hobby-oriented social groups than people with a spouse or roommate are.
These are just some of the benefits that people like Brad Lomas experience while living alone. For example, Lomas enjoys playing bridge, bocce ball and chess with his friends frequently and he also goes out to visit local comedy clubs.

Brad Lomas - Comic Book Collecting

Brad Lomas, like many men who were born in the 1960's, enjoys collecting and reading comic books in his spare time. Though most comic book collections aren't as valuable as they once were, collectors like Lomas still treat them as artwork to be preserved and revered. Comic book collectors are part of the reason that comic books experienced a resurgence of popularity in the 1960's and they're a primary reason why comic books are still being printed in large quantity today.

Nostalgia is a common reason why Lomas and other collectors enjoy comic books – 1960's children, for example, saw two major publishers battling for dominance of the industry: Marvel Comics and DC Comics. These two publishers still compete and collaborate with each other to this day, stirring up the nostalgic feeling with nearly every issue. Since the 60's, comic book conventions have allowed fans to come together so that they can meet to discuss comic books and even meet the artists of a beloved series.

Another reason why people often collect comic books is their appreciation for the story and a drive to complete a series. If a person identifies with a particular comic book character, as Lomas does with a few of the stars in his collection, they take a greater interest in following the story. After a few years of following various comic book story lines, collectors often find themselves in possession of hundreds of comic book issues. At this point, the collector will usually decide either to cherish his comic book collection and continue adding to it or to further explore comic book collecting for profit.

When a comic book collector is motivated by profit, they often seek first issues, special edition comics and issues that detail a pivotal moment in a character's story. With guidelines such as these and the help of comic book price guides, collectors can indulge their love of comics while making money on the side.

Comic book hobbyists like Brad Lomas collect comics for the stories and the nostalgia more than the profit. When Lomas heads to a comic shop, he's usually on the hunt for the next issue in his favorite series or for a new series, and a new character, to follow.

Brad Lomas - What it Takes for Human Resources Consulting

Brad Lomas knows as well as any Human Resources (HR) Consultant that the job isn't as easy as it sounds. General job titles like HR Consultant tend to go unnoticed for their level of difficultly and for how involved the employee is with their clients. HR Consultants fulfill several separate job roles for their clients in order to keep their businesses running smoothly.
Brad Lomas

HR Consultants work as the marketing and sales manager, the IT specialist and the accounting department, all under one job title. When a business comes to an HR Consultant, it presents one or several business issues that it would like the HR Consultant to fix. These problems are generally placed under the label of “HR Issues.”

Many HR issues revolve around retaining existing employees and ensuring that those employees remain productive. If a business is facing low productivity, for example, it is the job of the HR Consultant to locate the problem and amend it, no matter who or what is the cause. An HR Consultant must also handle issues of diversity and they must help companies enforce their policies of reduced discrimination. If discrimination-related incidents occur in the workplace, the HR Consultant helps enforce disciplinary actions against the offending party. In fact, discipline is yet another large part of being an HR Consultant. The consultant helps collect evidence, obtain statements and resolve issues in a legal, amicable manner.

Other tasks an HR Consultant manages for their clients include outsourcing work, managing payroll, keeping health and safety records, managing employee/employer relations and handling employee training. Even if an HR Consultant is using comprehensive HR software and has HR training, the best way for them to obtain applicable experience is through action. Brad Lomas has several years of experience working as an HR consultant but, by his own admission, he still learns new things about the job almost every day.

The Benefits of Living Alone

Not every person is destined are cut out to be a parent to children. There are many advantages to being child free. Individuals that do not have children witness what families go through and the demands that children put on people. Due to a figure that says that families are getting smaller in general and many are not even happening because of cultural and professional influences, there is a likelihood that more people each year will not have any children during their lives. While some people may look at this a sad thing, for those that do not have children there are reports that say they are pleased with the decision that they have made (when it indeed has been their decision to make).

Brad Lomas

History tells us that traditional reasons for having children were largely economic. Children were guarantees of financial security, especially in old age. In modern times, retirement savings and other long-term planning have substituted that notion in the minds of people. Thankfully, people enjoy being independent and being free from financial burdens. That brings up another tradition and a reason for having children which is that loneliness in old age could be alleviated by having a number of children. The truth of the matter is that most of the population will be over age 65 in a short 20 years. It will be difficult to be lonely without many people. Brad Lomas is a 50-year-old human resources professional that enjoys his child free lifestyle and the life of a single, successful consultant.

The Perfect Ribs

Barbecue is something that many people enjoy as an activity in their free time. There are many recipes for many types of meets out there. There are also many different styles of cooking that involve different elements and substrate during the cooking process, different types of barbecues, and different recipes throughout the cooking process. Within those differences are a variety of ingredients and components of barbecue that have delighted many fans over the years. Cooking pork is an affair that usually involves smoking at a low temperature for a long amount of time. This type of cooking apparatus usually involves a device known as a smoker.

Brad Lomas

A smoker is designed to cook meat with the heat and flavoring of the smoke that comes from burning logs or charcoal. This specialized device does not expose the meat to direct heat, it is more indirect than anything. That is exactly how pork spare ribs are cooked by some of the best in the business. They apply a seasoning that consist of either a dry rub mixture, brining or marinating ribs so they are flavorful. Pork seems to match up well with apple flavorings which tends to sway barbecue cooks into using apple as the wood fuel and as an elements in flavoring. From there, it is truly all about cooking low in temperature at a slow pace. This allows the pork ribs to develop an outer crispness while remaining juicy inside. With the right seasoning, the meat can be cooked to a temperature and moisture content that literally has it falling off of the bone. The key is tenderness and that is exactly what amateur cook and barbecue fan Brad Lomas tries to integrate whenever he is cooking the perfect ribs.

Tebow Time

Tim Tebow is a controversial quarterback that plays in the National Football League. He is a professional that attracted a lot of attention when he came out of college. Part of this reason is that he was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft and there were many people who felt that he was undeserving of this high of a selection. Others felt that he had proven that he was a great quarterback during his college years. He had won championships and had also won the Heisman Trophy, which is college football’s highest individual award. He played for an extremely short amount of time for the Denver Broncos. When he got his chance to start, his performance was one which was a mixed spectacle of will and game strategy which produced an unexpected amount of wins for the team. The team went on to win a first round game in the playoffs, but ultimately lost to the New England Patriots in Boston. The next off-season, he was released by the team when they signed free-agent and NFL legend Peyton Manning to be the new quarterback.

Brad Lomas

Tebow ended up playing for the Jets, then the Patriots and spent some time in an unremarkable period of his career. Brad Lomas is a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, who have picked up this exciting and controversial player as a backup option. He has spent two years away from the game during which he has worked on his fundamental skills off the field. Many have great hopes that he can make the team and maybe show some of his magic at some point down the line.

Stand Up Specials

Over the years, there have been some truly legendary standup comedians that have made specials on cable television and in the movies. In one form or another, standup comedy has been around since the days of vaudeville. In the late 1970s, the standup special took off and has essentially become the high watermark for a successful comic in their careers. The most legendary comics of all time have all had their important and well received standup special to speak of. For example, in 1987, Rosanne Barr had an HBO special which serve as a major introduction for this comedian and led to a career on television for her. Stephen Wright is a well-known comedian from the late 1970s and early 80s. In 1985, he put out an HBO one hour special that showcased his clever and unique form of comedy. Delirious was a 1983 HBO special featuring emerging comedian Eddie Murphy. This performance of groundbreaking material included legendary bits by the comedian and profane material that popularized a new form of comedy.

Brad Lomas is a big fan of standup comedy and he enjoys going to a number of edgy comedy clubs in his home town of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He goes out to local hotspots in the city and sees many acts as they emerge and tour the clubs there. He is a big fan of a number of these stand up specials which are some of the best of all time. Lifting Weights for Gains

There are many people in the country that find some way to work out on a consistent basis. One of the most favorite ways for people to exercise is the muscle resistance activity known as lifting weights or weightlifting. This is a form of exercise that has become very popular over the last 50 years or so. It truly started to take on a wide cultural presence in the 1950s with the publication of muscle magazines which covered the physiques of athletes that were focused on competitions and photo shoots. In the 1960s, the bodybuilding culture was sort of a countercultural movement that challenged athletic sports in interesting ways in the realm of public attention. The 1970s had the over the top characters in the world of bodybuilding which included Lou Ferrigno and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Brad Lomas

From that point on, the physiques of professional bodybuilders started taking on more unrealistic proportions and cartoonish features. The public soon strayed from their adulation of these athletes which were clearly not living a healthy lifestyle yet espousing the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. The 1990s introduced the performance-enhancing drug scandals into the world of traditional sports. Major scandals involving Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and other famous athletes change the public opinion on their acceptance of performance-enhancing drugs in the sports that they love so much. Today, many athletes use weightlifting not for physique building, but for building strength and they are able to implement efficient techniques to achieve that strain to the benefit of the sport that they participate in. Brad Lomas is an active lifestyle weightlifter that is a former semiprofessional baseball player. He has used weightlifting throughout his career to help him achieve things on the field and he has done it naturally. Although he is 50 years old, he is as strong as a man half his age and because of the attention that he has paid to his health, he has never had any major injuries.
